Happy LeBron Appreciation Day! Really.

For years, Akron’s solitary claim to fame was being the “Rubber Capital of the World.” And the founding of the Professional Bowlers Association! Oh, and let’s not forget “the Crossroads of the Deaf.

Don’t ask.

But for the past 11 years, Akron has gone by another name: the birthplace of LeBron. That beats being the birthplace of the tire industry, any day.

Presumably Akron doesn’t want to go back to the days of being “tire town” any time soon, though, so they’ve joined the efforts to guilt trip—I mean, persuade—LeBron into staying with the Cavaliers. Their idea? On June 19 the city will hold “LeBron Appreciation Day” (or LAD, for short, if you feel like it), a day of festivities and free food, all in the name of the King. The event kicks off at Akron University’s brand new InfoCision Stadium.

Hey, even such luminaries as Akron Mayor Don Plusquelli will be present! We’ll see whether LeBron himself can be shamed—I mean, convinced—to appear.

See, Akron doesn’t want to see their golden boy leave Cleveland any more than the rest of Ohio does.
